Sensex closed at fresh record highs while Nifty 50 was 5 points away from its record closing high. In the broader indices, the Nifty Midcap100 index scaled an all-time high of 60,408.25 before settling with a gain of 0.38 per cent at a record high close of 60,259.75. Nifty Smallcap100 index ended the week’s first trading session with gains of 0.16 per cent.
Meanwhile, Asian stocks ended mixed on Monday in thin holiday trade as a slew of Chinese data disappointed and caution prevailed ahead of the Fed, BoJ and BoE policy meetings this week, with central banks in Japan and the U.K. both expected to stand pat on rates.
Whereas European stocks struggled for direction on Monday as a slew of Chinese data missed expectations. The pan European STOXX 600 was marginally lower at 515.93 after climbing 0.8 percent on Friday. The German DAX dipped 0.3 percent, while France's CAC 40 and the U.K.'s FTSE 100 were marginally higher.
In the commodities market, Gold prices traded near record levels on Monday, driven by a weaker dollar and bets of a more aggressive rate reduction by the U.S. Federal Reserve at its upcoming policy meeting this week. Oil prices traded higher on Monday as a drop in Libyan exports as well as expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut this week offset weaker economic data from China.
Among individual shares, shares of Bajaj Housing Finance surged as much as 135.70 per cent from the IPO issue price of Rs 70 to hit the upper circuit of Rs 135.7 on the BSE. The company’s shares listed at a premium of 114.28 percent at Rs 150 on the BSE today.
The 30-share benchmark index ended at 82988.78 up by 97.84 points or by 0.12 % and then NSE Nifty was at 25383.75 up by 27.25 points or by 0.11 %.
During the day's trade, Sensex touched intraday high of 83184.34 and intraday low of 82832.82 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 25445.7 and intraday low of 25336.20.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 7342.10,-3.36%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 2866.50,-2.30%), Bajaj Finserv Ltd. (Rs. 1858.05,-1.89%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 1439.35,-0.87%), Titan Company Ltd. (Rs. 3737.95,-0.79%), among others.
Among the sectors, Metal index was at 32092.22 up by 208.76 points or by 0.65%. National Aluminium Company Ltd. (Rs. 189.35,+3.84%), JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 970.95,+1.73%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 683.90,+1.60%), Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 1040.90,+0.90%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 493.55,+0.69%),.
